Beyond the faucet you also will have several common types of kitchen sinks. Most homes will have a sink with one or two bays. These sinks can be top mounted or under mounted and are made from a variety of different materials in many different colors. With pots and pans banging around, forks and knives scraping, its not surprising that leaks can occur.
Faucets have several moving parts and depending on the make and manufacturer, these parts all vary from faucet to faucet. Leaking faucets can be caused by many different things, however, the most common issues require the replacement of valves, cartridges, seats, and springs that regulate the water flowing through the faucet. Depending on the manufacturer, you may have any one of the above listed items regulating the flow to your faucet. Replacing these parts usually requires the disassembly of handles and the removal and replacement of defective parts. Faucets may also leak/spray due to a clogged aerator or a bad gasket in the aerator. This can often be remedied by removing the aerator and cleaning/replacing parts. If you have a faucet with a sprayer, you may also see water leaking from the spray hose. This could be as simple as tightening the spray head to something more involved like replacing the entire spray hose.
Kitchen sinks are generally built to last, they can take just about anything that you throw at them. Some common things to keep an eye out for, however, is leaking under the sink. The most common leaks that you will find under a sink is a leaking basket strainer, or a leaking tail piece. Over time and with some wear and tear, these parts can shift, corrode, or just simply wear out. The basket strainer is the metal piece that everything drains through in your sink, they often come with stoppers so that you are able to fill your sink with water. The tail piece or p-trap underneath the sink can wear, get shifted, or corrode just like the above, but most commonly, leaking from this area of your plumbing is often caused by repeatedly bumping it with things that you store under your sink.
